How Google decides who’s “near”
Every local result is scored on three axes:
| Factor | What it means | Can you influence it? |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile + site match the query | Fully — categories, services, page content |
| Distance | How close you are to the searcher | Barely — but service-area settings help |
| Prominence | How known/trusted you look — reviews, mentions, links | Fully — and it compounds |
Distance is fixed. The businesses that win treat relevance and prominence as the whole game — and in most Dubai niches, the competition is doing neither properly.
Your Google Business Profile is the battlefield
The map pack is drawn almost entirely from Business Profiles, not websites. The essentials — verification, exact categories, photos, hours, service lists — are covered in our complete GBP setup guide. The points most Dubai businesses miss:
- Primary category is a ranking decision, not a label. “Emergency plumber” and “Plumber” rank for different searches — pick the most specific truthful option.
- Fill the services/products sections with real names and prices. These match long-tail queries (“gas cooker installation near me”) that the description never will.
- Photos are freshness signals. Profiles updated monthly look alive to the algorithm — and to customers.
Reviews: the compounding asset
Reviews feed rankings and clicks, and the mechanics matter:
- Ask at the moment of delight — job done, delivery received, problem solved. A WhatsApp message with the direct review link converts best in the UAE.
- Keep it steady. Five reviews a month for a year beats sixty in one week — freshness is scored.
- Reply to every review, both kinds. Replies signal an active business and let you add keywords naturally (“Thanks for choosing us for your villa AC maintenance in Arabian Ranches”).
- Never buy reviews. Filtered or penalized profiles lose everything the shortcuts gained.
Your website: give every area and service a home
Google can’t rank you for “web design Business Bay” if no page says those words in a real sentence. The structure that works:
- One page per core service — not a list, a page: what it costs, how it works, photos.
- Area pages where genuine — if you serve Marina, JLT and Downtown, say so with specifics (projects done there, travel times), not copy-pasted paragraphs with the area name swapped.
- NAP consistency — name, address, phone identical on site, profile and every directory. Mismatches quietly erode trust scores.
- Local schema — LocalBusiness structured data with geo-coordinates connects the dots for crawlers, and increasingly for AI engines answering “best X in Dubai” — the GEO playbook builds on exactly this foundation.
Speed and locality back it all up
Local search is mobile search — someone standing on a street with a phone. Core Web Vitals apply, and a site hosted next to your customers loads visibly faster than one answering from Europe. It’s the same physics we covered in our Dubai datacenter guide — geo-signals and speed working together: local domain, local hosting, local content.
